A falling counterweight, opening night — and rigging that had been inspected and cleared that same morning. A full printable evidence packet plus three real digital logins to unlock. Built for a group of 4–8, 90–150 minutes.

Description

Opening night of "The Nightjar" — the most anticipated new production in years, the long-awaited comeback of brilliant, difficult director Gabriel Thorne. Minutes after intermission begins, he's found dead backstage, struck by a falling counterweight from the fly system above the stage. The rigging had been inspected and cleared that same morning.

That single detail turns a tragic accident into a suspected homicide before you've even set foot on the scene. You're assigned the case with full police authority — search warrants, subpoenaed records, a docket that goes to the National Prosecuting Authority if it holds up.

What you get: A full printable evidence packet — incident reports, witness statements, a forensic pathologist's post-mortem findings, chain-of-custody tags — built to real SAPS procedural standards, paired with three separate real digital gates: warrant-obtained access into private accounts and a public archive, each unlockable only once you've found the right credentials hidden in the physical evidence.

Three fully-developed suspects, each requiring their own gate to resolve. The two most emotionally compelling names in the file — the betrayed ex-partner, the uncredited co-writer — are exactly the ones with airtight alibis. The actual killer is deliberately the least satisfying answer on paper: calculated, financially motivated, and easy to overlook until the evidence forces the point.

  • Format: Printable PDF evidence packet + web-based digital investigation
  • Players: Built for a group of 4–8, with three suspects meaning a group can split up and tackle each in parallel — though a sharp solo solver can work through it too, just more slowly
  • Typical solve time: 90–150 minutes
  • Framing: You're official police detectives with full investigative authority — search warrants, subpoenas, and a docket that has to hold up

Every procedural detail — the incident reports, the medico-legal findings, the witness statement forms — is checked against real South African terminology and institutional practice, not assumed. Nothing hands you the answer; everything has to be assembled.
